01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
A clear soy broth with unpretentious noodles, thick cuts of roast pork, and tender bamboo shoots carries the straightforward appeal of an everyday neighbourhood Chinese eatery. The ramen at Tanchō, located in the Yahiro district of Sumida, is built on a gentle stock that drinks easily on its own and balances nicely against more assertively seasoned rice dishes.
The noodle selection is broad. Options range from wonton noodles filled with silky morsels to vegetable-topped moyashi soba and thick-noodled tanmen. Beside the soups and noodles, an order of thick-skinned, garlic-laced gyoza makes a satisfying addition to a meal or a hearty accompaniment to a drink.
Daily noodle and rice sets
A practical choice for lunch or dinner is the rotating daily set combining ramen with a smaller rice dish. Monday pairs noodles with half a portion of fried rice, Tuesday brings aromatic dry curry, Wednesday offers a half mapo tofu bowl, Thursday features a small chashu pork bowl, and Saturday serves a small yakiniku beef bowl. Beyond the moist, generously filled fried rice and dry curry, classic canteen staples like omurice and katsudon are also served à la carte, accommodating different appetites.
The shop operates for lunch from 11:00 to 14:00 and reopens for dinner from 17:00 to 20:00, with closures on Fridays. Payment is strictly cash only, so having coins or small notes ready ensures a smooth visit.
